SCORPIO Snorkel Trip at Gili Layar

Environmental Statement - At Secret Island Resort we are trying to advance Ecological conditions. Many of our out door chairs are made from used motorbike tires. 80% of all wood building materials are 100+ year old teak and iron wood.  All toilets are salt water flushed and we have installed 7 Solar hot water heaters. Solar panels are next budget permitting.

We frequently clean trash from the ocean area around the gorgeous but sometimes plastic trash polluted beachs. This washes down from Lombok's rivers around the 12 SW. Gili islands. We work hard to educate our staf and the local people to realize that 'GLOBAL WARMING' is real and happening at a alarming rate. For some lucky reason, the ocean water around the 12 South West Gilis are still flourishing. Lucky indeed! Here is a recent quote written by Joni Hari about the loss of Ocean Plankton that is happening all around the world.

"Plant plankton are tiny creatures that live in the oceans and carry out a job you and I depend on to stay alive. They produce half the world's oxygen, and suck up planet-warming carbon dioxide. Yet this year, one of the world's most distinguished scientific journals, Nature, revealed that 40 per cent of them have been killed by the warming of the oceans since 1950. Professor Boris Worm, who co-authored the study, said in shock: "I've been trying to think of a biological change that's bigger than this and I can't think of one." That has been the result of less than one degree of warming. Now we are on course for at least three degrees more warming this century. What will happen?"  Very good question: Our answer is do what you can when you can and keep talking to whoever may listen.

Topography - Bungalow over the Reef to right

Gili Gede - is the largest adjacent island of Lombok Island. It has somehow been unknown to many travel agents; even local residents often do not know where it is. Yet it has several very interesting stories to tell & some speculative ancient myths from at least the 13th century. The likely-hood of these stories center around Gili Gede very protected prestine waters;: Many cruising sailors are not yet aware that the huge inside bay exists for two reasons. 1) That it looks like a point of land when sailing by and 2) The nautical charts mark the entrance full of obstructions, which is unfair as these are only "Pearl Buoys" and easily navigable, especially in the day time.

The Inside bay with its clean clear water with scenic surroundings dropping down the hill sides to many excellent secluded beachs, "It is just beginning to be explored by tourists, the fishermans have known about it for a very long time. Lots of fish are exported from these nearby waters".

* During rainy season, surrounding Gili/Tembowong bay are sometimes muddy from river run off.  January through  March: Call for update info.

You can have a very friendly walk around the island in 3 -5 hours. Enjoying both sunset and sunrise from the many beaches is one of the most romantic moments you may ever have. At least that is what some have said, who have had the pleasure.

  Aladdin Myth

On the other hand, this "Secret Island" has stories about pirate legends, where it is told that Aladdin passed by on his way to Arabia where he perhaps stopped by in the 15th century and wrote one of 1001 tales of Arabian Knights. These famous tales are said to have been written by several different people of several centuries.. There are a few Sheiks with the name Saladin/Saludin marked in history starting from the 15th century who likely traveled on to Arabian. Of course these stories are just local legends that could of occurred starting way back in the 13th century: Either way it makes for 'Sea Yales of Yonder Times'

The Sea turns Green on Occasion

During the 12th to the 13th centuries; tall 200ft wooden ships from China roamed the Indian, China & Arabian seas long before the Dutch, Portuguese & English colonial era. These great ships were burned by the North Chinese Emperor in the 14th century after conquering the South. If you look closely and feel the mystic rumble here; you just may hear Aladdin spirit laughing and reciting Sufi poetry with the famous Chinese Admiral "Sao Bao" who sailed to Arabia. Around the same time a famous rebellious Sufi Islamic Poet fled from Persia possibly bringing this story to Lombok's Perfect Sailing Ship Safe harbor now known as "Gili Gede".

Sufi Myth

The locals speak of a Sufi poet named Runi; he is said to have lived and died here and left ancestors that are still surviving & thriving in the mystical waters. However you take these tales, it all adds up to a warm mystery that now attracts many world class sailors and tourists to Gili Gede. The beautiful surroundings and undisturbed nature of Gili Gede have inspired the "Secret Island Resort" which has NOW open for your special enjoyment via the rare & natural mystical tranquility of "Gili Gede, Mate".
